According to the needs of the occasion, speakers could identify the Athenian people either as a unified demos or as a collection of sub-groups, and they could exploit either differences or similarities between Athenians and other Greeks, and between Greeks and 'barbarians'. Names and naming strategies were an essential tool in the (de)construction of individuals' identities, while the Athenians' civic identity could be constructed in terms of honour(s), ethnicity, socio-economic status, or religion. Within the forensic setting, the physical location and procedural conventions of an Athenian trial could shape the identities of its participants in a unique if transient way. The Making of Identities in Athenian Oratory is a fascinating look at this understudied aspect of Athenian oratory, and will be of interest to anyone working on the speeches themselves, identity in ancient Greece, or ancient oratory and rhetoric more broadly"--</mods:abstract><mods:note type="statement of responsibility">edited by Jakub Filonik, Brenda Griffith-Williams and Janek Kucharski</mods:note><mods:note>Includes bibliographical references and index</mods:note><mods:subject><mods:topic>Oratory, Ancient</mods:topic><mods:topic>Rhetoric, Ancient</mods:topic><mods:topic>Greek literature / History and criticism</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="gnd" authorityURI="http://d-nb.info/gnd/"><mods:geographic authority="gnd" authorityURI="http://d-nb.info/gnd/" valueURI="http://d-nb.info/gnd/4003366-1">Athen</mods:geographic><mods:topic valueURI="http://d-nb.info/gnd/4048882-2">Rede</mods:topic><mods:topic valueURI="http://d-nb.info/gnd/4113791-7">Griechisch</mods:topic><mods:topic valueURI="http://d-nb.info/gnd/4026482-8">Identität</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:classification authority="lcc">|PA3264</mods:classification><mods:classification authority="bk">17.77</mods:classification><mods:classification authority="bk">17.93</mods:classification><mods:classification authority="bk">18.42</mods:classification><mods:identifier type="eki">KXP1677215356</mods:identifier><mods:identifier type="isbn" displayLabel="ISBN 13">978-0-367-22820-0</mods:identifier><mods:identifier type="isbn" invalid="yes" displayLabel="ISBN 13">9780429277023</mods:identifier><mods:identifier type="ncidn">HT020484722</mods:identifier><mods:relatedItem type="series"><mods:titleInfo><mods:title>Routledge monographs in classical studies</mods:title></mods:titleInfo></mods:relatedItem><mods:relatedItem type="otherFormat" displayLabel="Erscheint auch als"><mods:note>Online-Ausgabe</mods:note><mods:identifier type="isbn">978-0-429-27702-3, ebk</mods:identifier></mods:relatedItem><mods:location><mods:physicalLocation authority="local library code">61</mods:physicalLocation><mods:holdingSimple><mods:copyInformation><mods:subLocation>02</mods:subLocation><mods:shelfLocator>anth200.f488</mods:shelfLocator></mods:copyInformation></mods:holdingSimple></mods:location><mods:extension><vlz:info xmlns:vlz="http://visuallibrary.net/vlz/1.0/" version="2"/></mods:extension><mods:recordInfo><mods:recordCreationDate encoding="marc">20200624</mods:recordCreationDate><mods:recordChangeDate encoding="marc">20200910</mods:recordChangeDate><mods:recordIdentifier source="ulbdce">148129601</mods:recordIdentifier><mods:descriptionStandard>rda</mods:descriptionStandard></mods:recordInfo></mods:mods></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="amd1066475"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights1066475">
