Jahrhundert. Durch seine Werke sowie durch seine Anstellungen und Beziehungen nahm er Einfluss auf das Chorwesen. Da sein Wirken für die Chormusik nur im Rahmen der Verhältnisse seiner Zeit betrachtet werden kann, werden im Zuge dieser Arbeit nicht nur die musikalisch relevanten Inhalte analysiert und erörtert, sondern überdies die gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen berücksichtigt. Neben der Darstellung der Entwicklung des Chorwesens wird der Fokus auf ausgewählte Stationen seines Schaffens gelegt, darunter Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt und Leipzig. Um die Frage nach dem besonderen Engagement Mendelssohn Bartholdys für das Chorlied a cappella zu verdeutlichen, werden sein Verständnis von Chormusik und die Kompositionstechnik seiner Chorlieder anhand ausgewählter Beispiele untersucht.Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is considered a pioneer representative of 19th century a cappella choral songs. His works as well as his position and relations enabled him to influence the genre of choral singing. Since his impact on choral music can only be fully understood within the context of his time, this thesis does not only analyze musical aspects but also considers his social environment. In addition to the depiction of the development of choral singing, selected stages of his work are brought into focus, among them being Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Leipzig.
