Working with recognized formal conventions and typical thematic concerns, Tavor Bannet demonstrates how narrative epistolary novels opposed the real, situated, transactional and instrumental character of letters, with their multilateral relationships and temporally shifting readings, to merely documentary uses of letters in history and law. Analyzing issues of reading and misreading, knowledge and ignorance, communication and credulity, this study investigates how novelists adapted familiar romance plots centred on mysteries of identity to test the viability of empiricism's new culture of fact and challenge positivism's later all-pervading regime of truth. Close reading of narrative-epistolary novels by authors ranging from Aphra Behn and Charlotte Lennox to Frances Burney and Wilkie Collins tracks transgenerational debates, bringing to light both what Victorians took from their eighteenth-century forbears and what they changed"--</mods:abstract><mods:note type="statement of responsibility">Eve Tavor Bannet (University of Oklahoma)</mods:note><mods:subject><mods:topic>Epistolary fiction, English / History and criticism</mods:topic><mods:topic>Narration (Rhetoric) / History</mods:topic><mods:topic>LITERARY CRITICISM / European / English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:classification authority="lcc">|PR830.E65</mods:classification><mods:identifier type="eki">KXP1766065430</mods:identifier><mods:identifier type="isbn" displayLabel="ISBN 13">978-1-316-51885-4</mods:identifier><mods:identifier type="ncidn">HT021137707</mods:identifier><mods:relatedItem type="otherFormat" displayLabel="Erscheint auch als"><mods:titleInfo><mods:title>Letters in the story</mods:title></mods:titleInfo><mods:name><mods:namePart>Bannet, Eve Tavor, 1947-</mods:namePart></mods:name><mods:originInfo><mods:place><mods:placeTerm>Cambridge</mods:placeTerm></mods:place><mods:dateIssued>United Kingdom ; New York , NY Cambridge University Press, 2021</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:note>Online-Ausgabe</mods:note><mods:identifier type="isbn">9781009003698</mods:identifier></mods:relatedItem><mods:location><mods:physicalLocation authority="local library code">5</mods:physicalLocation><mods:holdingSimple><mods:copyInformation><mods:subLocation>00000010</mods:subLocation><mods:shelfLocator>2021/5066</mods:shelfLocator></mods:copyInformation></mods:holdingSimple></mods:location><mods:location><mods:physicalLocation authority="local library code">294/20</mods:physicalLocation><mods:holdingSimple><mods:copyInformation><mods:subLocation>00020000</mods:subLocation><mods:shelfLocator>in Bearbeitung</mods:shelfLocator></mods:copyInformation></mods:holdingSimple></mods:location><mods:location><mods:physicalLocation authority="local library code">466</mods:physicalLocation><mods:holdingSimple><mods:copyInformation><mods:subLocation>11</mods:subLocation><mods:shelfLocator>DTSC2255</mods:shelfLocator></mods:copyInformation></mods:holdingSimple></mods:location><mods:extension><vlz:info xmlns:vlz="http://visuallibrary.net/vlz/1.0/" version="2"/></mods:extension><mods:recordInfo><mods:recordCreationDate encoding="marc">20211108</mods:recordCreationDate><mods:recordChangeDate encoding="marc">20220210</mods:recordChangeDate><mods:recordIdentifier source="ubpbce">DTSC2255</mods:recordIdentifier><mods:descriptionStandard>rda</mods:descriptionStandard></mods:recordInfo></mods:mods></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="amd1122052"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights1122052">
